Occupational Therapy Resources

Occupational Therapists (OT) are medical professionals that work to improve a person's overall independence with their engagement in daily occupations. Treatment is personalized to address safety, promote independence, support co-morbid diagnosis and progress overall functioning skills. The term occupation refers to any daily task that a person needs to do, wants to do or is expected to do that brings meaning to their life. These tasks are divided into ADL's and IADL's:

Activities of Daily Living (ADL)- dressing, bathing, toileting, feeding, grooming, sleeping

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL)- any other occupation you engage in that provides personalized meaning (socialization, hobbies, sports, raising a child, work, school and more)

Occupational Therapists are trained in both physical and psychological interventions. Occupational therapy's history is rooted in mental health treatment. This combination of training and therapeutic focus makes Occupational Therapists ideal medical professionals for the treatment of those with FND, chronic pain and their co-morbid symptoms. Occupational therapy utilization varies country to country, so access may vary depending on where you are located.

How do Occupational Therapist's help those with FND?

Occupational therapy supports those with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) by restoring independence with daily occupations through personalized, developmentally appropriate, function focused task engagement. Through focusing on routine building, activity modification, social engagement, and self-management strategies (sensory and nervous system regulation); OT empowers patients and their support systems to rewire their nervous system and confidently re-engage in meaningful life activities.
